Diabetes drug maker GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to pay more than $700 million to settle about 12,000 Avandia lawsuit claims. The lawsuits allege that GSK failed to warn patients about the diabetes drug’s increased stroke and heart attack risk. Several studies have linked Avandia use to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and congestive heart failure.
Avandia settlements in more than 1,000 case are expected soon according to an Avandia attorney representing plaintiffs on cases in Illinois, California, and Pennsylvania. Settlement talks in California already have resulted in 2,400 Avandia claims being resolved. Avandia settlement amounts vary depending on the specific facts relating to the personal injury or wrongful death damages suffered in each case.
An Avandia recall in Europe was announced last September. The FDA fell short of ordering an Avandia recall, but issued tight new restrictions on the diabetes medication. Once the world’s best-selling diabetes drug, Avandia sales topped $3.2 billion in 2006. Glaxo has said that it no longer would promote the drug.
