Drug experts call for UK Avandia recall due to side effects
Concerns over Avandia side effects has led an independent panel of drug safety experts in England to call for an Avandia recall.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is the British counterpart to the U.S. FDA. Avandia side effects risks outweigh its benefits, the regulators were advised by the panel. A letter to doctors recommended that alternativeType 2 diabetes treatments should be considered. The British Medical Journal ((BMJ), in addition to calling for an immediate Avandia recall, said the drug never should have been approved for use in the first place.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved Avandia as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes in 2000. The drug’s manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, holds firm to its position that the risk of congestive heart failure, stroke and heart attack side effects are not higher than those of other diabetes medicines.
GSK defends the safety of its drug in a statement released September 6, 2010, saying its research has shown that, “Avandia does not increase the overall risk of heart attack, stroke or death compared to other diabetes medicine.”
The report published in the BMJ was critical of the drug company’s research methods and the EMA’s approval process.
In 2007, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine linked Avandia use to 43% higher risk of heart attack. A new black box warning was was required by the FDA.
